ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY FOR RUSSIA AND UKRAINE

At this hour, a weary and distraught humanity stands with you beneath the cross, needing to entrust itself to you and, through you, to consecrate itself to Christ. The people of Ukraine and Russia, who venerate you with great love, now turn to you… these words contained in the act of consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was carried out by Pope Francis in connection with the bishops and faithful from around the world, greatly touch the heart.

Nazareth communities from around the world also participated in the act of consecration. Sisters from both Roman communities, as well as general councilors who were in Rome at the time, participated in the ceremony presided over by the Holy Father in St. Peter’s Basilica. It was a very moving and humble prayer of those who believe and trust in the power of humbly confessing their sins before God and asking for His help. The penitential liturgy began at 5 p.m., and at 6:30 p.m., in front of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, the Pope read the act of consecration.

The text of the act is interspersed with quotations from the great Marian tradition of the Church and is an expression of the belief that this dedication will help to transform the hearts of people: He has given you to us and made your Immaculate Heart a refuge for the church and for all humanity. We now turn to you and knock at the door of your heart. We are your beloved children. In every age you make yourself known to us, calling us to conversion. At this dark hour, help us and grant us your comfort.

At the conclusion of the act of consecration, the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica symbolically accompanied this humble request to Our Lady that through her mediation, as the papal prayer says:

God’s mercy be poured out on the earth and the gentle rhythm of peace return to mark our days. Our Lady of the “fiat,” on whom the Holy Spirit descended, restore among us the harmony that comes from God. May you, our “living fountain of hope,” water the dryness of our hearts. In your womb Jesus took flesh; help us to foster the growth of communion. You once trod the streets of our world; lead us now on the paths of peace. Amen.
